Snap-on Dentures (Klikgebit) in Amsterdam
If you wear traditional dentures, you know the daily frustrations: slipping while eating, adhesive pastes, the worry that they might shift when you speak. For many expats in Amsterdam, these struggles are compounded by the challenge of finding a specialist who speaks their language and understands the Dutch insurance system. At AltaDent, we offer a proven solution — snap-on dentures, known in Dutch as a klikgebit — and we guide you through the entire process in English.
Snap-on dentures have transformed the lives of thousands of our patients over the past 17 years. They combine the convenience of removable dentures with the stability of dental implants, giving you a secure, comfortable fit that stays in place all day.
What Are Snap-on Dentures?
Snap-on dentures are removable dentures that click onto dental implants placed in your jawbone. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on your gums and rely on suction or adhesive, snap-on dentures are anchored by two to four small implants. The denture has special attachments on its underside that snap onto the implants, creating a firm, stable connection.
You can remove the denture yourself for daily cleaning, and then simply click it back into place. The result is a denture that:
- Stays firmly in place — No more slipping, shifting, or clicking sounds
- Restores strong chewing ability — Eat the foods you love with confidence
- Eliminates denture adhesive — No more messy pastes or powders
- Preserves jawbone — The implants stimulate the bone, slowing the natural bone loss that occurs with traditional dentures
- Looks completely natural — Custom-made in our own laboratory to match your facial features
The Treatment Process
Step 1: Free consultation
We examine your mouth, take digital X-rays, and assess whether you have sufficient bone density for implants. We explain the procedure, timeline, and costs in detail. If you currently wear dentures, bring them along so we can evaluate the best approach.
Step 2: Implant placement
Two to four titanium implants are placed in your jawbone under local anaesthesia. The number depends on whether the snap-on denture is for your upper or lower jaw and on your bone quality. The procedure takes about one to two hours. In many cases, you can continue wearing your existing denture (with temporary modifications) during the healing period.
Step 3: Healing
The implants need 3 to 6 months to integrate with the bone. During this time, we monitor your progress and keep you comfortable with your current or temporary denture.
Step 4: New denture with attachments
Once healing is complete, our on-site lab crafts your new snap-on denture. We take impressions, do a try-in to perfect the fit and appearance, and then deliver your finished denture. You click it in for the first time and walk out with a completely stable smile.
Costs and Insurance Coverage
The total cost of snap-on dentures depends on the number of implants needed and the type of denture. At AltaDent, our prices are competitive because we manufacture the denture and prosthetic components in our own on-site laboratory. There are no external lab markups.
A typical snap-on denture on two implants (lower jaw) is one of the most cost-effective ways to dramatically improve denture stability and quality of life.
What does Dutch insurance cover?
Many supplementary dental insurance plans (aanvullende tandartsverzekering) cover implants and implant-retained dentures partially or fully. Coverage varies by policy — some plans reimburse 70% to 100% of the implant and prosthetic costs.
Basic insurance (basisverzekering) does not cover snap-on dentures. However, there are exceptions for specific medical conditions. We check this for you.
AltaDent is contracted with every Dutch health insurance company. We verify your coverage before treatment, provide a written cost estimate, and bill your insurer directly. You only pay the portion that is not covered by your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between snap-on dentures and fixed implant bridges?
Snap-on dentures are removable — you click them in and out for cleaning. Fixed implant bridges are permanently attached and can only be removed by a dentist. Snap-on dentures typically require fewer implants (2 to 4) and are more affordable, while fixed bridges (usually 4 to 6 implants) feel most like natural teeth. We can discuss both options during your free consultation.
Can my existing dentures be converted to snap-on dentures?
In some cases, yes. If your current denture is in good condition, it may be possible to retrofit it with snap-on attachments after implants are placed. Our lab can assess this and let you know whether a conversion or a new denture is the better option.
How do I clean snap-on dentures?
Remove the denture daily and clean it with a soft brush and denture cleaner, just as you would a regular denture. The implant attachments in your mouth should be gently cleaned with a soft toothbrush. We provide detailed cleaning instructions and demonstrate the routine during your fitting appointment.
Is the implant surgery painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and most patients experience little to no pain during surgery. Some mild soreness and swelling afterward is normal and typically resolves within a few days with standard pain relief.
