English Speaking Dentist in Amsterdam

English Speaking Dentist in Amsterdam

Moving to the Netherlands is exciting, but finding a dentist who truly understands you — in your own language — can feel like one task too many. At AltaDent Clinic, we make it easy. Our team speaks English fluently, along with Dutch, Spanish, and Turkish. Whether you just arrived in Amsterdam or have been here for years, you will always be understood, welcomed, and well cared for.

We know that navigating the Dutch healthcare system can be confusing, especially when it comes to dental insurance. That is exactly why we have built a practice that removes barriers. No language struggles at reception. No surprises on your invoice. Just honest, high-quality dental care from a team with over 17 years of experience and more than 4,497 treatments completed.

Complete Dental Care Under One Roof

AltaDent is not just a general dental practice — we are a full-service clinic with specialist treatments and our own on-site dental laboratory. That means faster results, better quality control, and lower costs for you.

General Dentistry

Regular check-ups, professional cleanings, fillings, and preventive care form the foundation of a healthy smile. We recommend a check-up every six months, which is covered by most Dutch basic insurance plans.

Specialist Treatments

  • Dental implants — Permanent tooth replacement starting from EUR 1,450, crafted in our own lab
  • Dentures — Full and partial dentures, custom-made on-site in just three appointments
  • Snap-on dentures (klikgebit) — Implant-retained dentures for a secure, comfortable fit
  • Crowns and bridges — Natural-looking restorations made with precision in our laboratory
  • Emergency dental care — Same-day denture repairs and urgent treatments

Because we have our own dental laboratory on the premises, we control every step of the process. There is no waiting weeks for a crown or denture to come back from an external lab. Many treatments are completed faster and at a lower cost than you might expect.

Dental Care for Your Whole Family

You do not need to find a separate dentist for your children. At AltaDent Clinic in Amsterdam Nieuw-West we treat every age at one practice, from a toddler’s first check-up to a grandparent’s dentures — all in English.

Dental care for children under 18 is covered

In the Netherlands, dental care for children under 18 is covered by the compulsory basic insurance (basisverzekering), with no deductible (eigen risico). That includes check-ups, cleaning, fillings and X-rays. Orthodontics — braces and aligners — falls outside this and requires supplementary insurance.

One trip for the whole family

Tell us how many people you are registering and how old the children are, and we will schedule your appointments back to back wherever possible, so you only have to come once. The practice is open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00; appointments early in the morning or at the end of the afternoon are usually easiest to combine with school and work.

Your child’s first visit

A first appointment is about getting comfortable, not treatment. We show your child the chair and the mirror, count the teeth together and explain each step as we go. Because our team speaks English, Dutch, Spanish and Turkish, we can talk to your child in the language they are most at ease with — and to you without anything getting lost in translation.

For more about how we work with children, see our page on the kindertandarts in Amsterdam Nieuw-West (in Dutch).

How to Register With a Dentist in Amsterdam

Unlike your GP (huisarts), you do not need a referral or a formal registration process to see a dentist in the Netherlands. Here is how it works at AltaDent:

  1. Contact us — Call, WhatsApp, or book online. We respond in English.
  2. Share your details — We will ask for your name, date of birth, BSN number (if you have one), and insurance information.
  3. Transfer your records — If you had a previous dentist in the Netherlands or abroad, we can request your dental records on your behalf. If not, no problem — we will start fresh with a thorough examination.
  4. Attend your first appointment — That is it. You are now registered.

There is no waiting list, no complicated paperwork, and no Dutch language requirement. You can register even if you have not yet received your BSN or finalised your insurance.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment at AltaDent typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Here is what happens:

  • Welcome and intake — Our English-speaking receptionist will greet you and confirm your details.
  • Dental examination — The dentist performs a comprehensive check of your teeth, gums, and mouth. Digital X-rays may be taken if needed.
  • Treatment plan — If any work is needed, your dentist will explain the options, timeline, and costs in clear English. You decide how to proceed.
  • Insurance check — We verify what is covered before scheduling any follow-up treatments.

If you are anxious about visiting the dentist, please let us know. Our team is experienced in treating nervous patients and will take extra time to make sure you feel comfortable.

Understanding Dutch Dental Insurance

The Dutch insurance system can be confusing, so here is a plain-English summary:

Basic insurance (basisverzekering)

Everyone living or working in the Netherlands must have basic health insurance. For adults (18+), basic insurance typically covers periodic dental check-ups and some preventive care. However, most restorative treatments like fillings, root canals, and crowns are not included in the basic package.

Supplementary dental insurance (aanvullende tandartsverzekering)

To cover treatments beyond basic check-ups, you need supplementary dental insurance. These packages vary widely — some cover 75% of fillings and crowns, others include implants or orthodontics. You choose your level of coverage when you sign up, typically during the open enrolment period in November and December each year.

What AltaDent does for you

We are contracted with every Dutch health insurance company. This means we bill your insurer directly. You do not have to pay upfront and file a claim yourself. Before any treatment, our team checks exactly what your policy covers and explains any out-of-pocket costs. No surprises.

Not insured yet? No problem. We welcome uninsured patients and provide clear, upfront pricing for all treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to register at AltaDent?

No. In the Netherlands, you can register directly with any dental practice. Simply call us, send a WhatsApp message, or fill in the online booking form. We will take care of the rest, including contacting your previous dentist for your records if needed.

Is my dental check-up covered by insurance?

Most basic Dutch insurance plans cover one or two dental check-ups per year. If you have supplementary dental insurance, additional treatments such as fillings, crowns, and dentures may also be covered. We always verify your coverage before starting treatment.

What if I do not have Dutch insurance yet?

You are still welcome. We treat all patients, insured or not. For uninsured patients, we offer transparent private rates and can provide a cost estimate before any treatment. Once you do obtain insurance, we will handle the transition smoothly.

Can I book an appointment in English?

Absolutely. From your first phone call to your final check-up, everything can be done in English. Our reception staff, dentists, and lab technicians are all comfortable communicating in English.

How much does a dental implant cost at AltaDent?

A complete dental implant with crown costs EUR 1,450 all-in. This includes the titanium implant, abutment, ceramic crown, 3D X-ray scan and all follow-up appointments — no hidden costs. Compared to prices in the UK, USA or other Western countries, this is a significant saving.

Can you repair my broken denture the same day?

In most cases, yes. Because we have our own in-house laboratory, we can repair broken or ill-fitting dentures much faster than practices that outsource their lab work. Call ahead so we can prepare for your visit.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We have no waiting lists. New patients can typically book a first consultation within a few days. For emergencies, call us directly on +31 20 619 54 82 — we aim to help you the same day.

Can I register my children at the same practice?

Yes. We treat all ages at both locations, and we plan family appointments back to back where we can, so one visit covers everyone.

Is dental care free for children in the Netherlands?

For children under 18, check-ups, fillings and X-rays are covered by the basic insurance with no deductible. Braces and aligners are not included and require supplementary insurance.

Do I need a BSN number to register?

No. While a BSN makes insurance billing easier, you can visit us and register as a patient without one. We can update your records once you receive it.

Can I switch from my current dentist to AltaDent?

Yes, at any time. There is no notice period or penalty for switching dentists in the Netherlands. Just contact us and we will handle the transfer of your records.

What if I need urgent dental care before I am fully registered?

Call us or send a WhatsApp message. We accept walk-ins for emergencies and will do our best to see you the same day, even if you are not yet a registered patient.

How much does a dental check-up cost without insurance?

A standard check-up follows the nationally regulated tariff set by the NZa (Dutch Healthcare Authority). Our team will inform you of the exact cost when you book. For specialist treatments, we offer a free initial consultation so you know what to expect financially.
